Yashi Wu: Exploring the World Through UWE Bristol
Posted:
Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by foreign cultures. As I studied Business English at Guangdong University of Technology, I learned about the opportunity to complete a top-up year at UWE Bristol.
It seemed like the perfect chance to expand my horizons, immerse myself in a new culture, and gain a colourful life experience. Even though nearly 200 students from my university were eligible for the programme, I was the only one in 2019 who chose to take this bold step to pursue a BA(Hons) in Business and Management.
Embracing a New Journey
Initially, I had some hesitations. UWE Bristol wasn’t widely known in China, and I wondered if I’d be welcomed as a Chinese student with limited English proficiency.
Yet, I was motivated by a Chinese saying: a frog in a well can only see a small part of the sky. With the support of UWE, including a ?3,000 scholarship, I decided to step out of my comfort zone.
Arriving in Bristol, I joined a pre-sessional course that helped me familiarise myself with the university, meet classmates, and make friends. Overcoming my anxieties about speaking English, I found creative ways to practice, from asking supermarket staff for assistance to engaging with locals through an international student centre.
Joining a host family further enriched my experience, as they welcomed me into their traditions and created lasting memories of shared meals, celebrations, and cultural exchange.
Learning the UWE Way
The academic experience at UWE Bristol was transformative. Lectures and tutorials encouraged collaboration, with tutorials fostering small group discussions to apply theories to real-world cases and engage with tutors.
Adapting to the UK’s academic expectations was initially challenging, but with my teacher’s guidance, I improved and developed strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
The support from my dissertation supervisor was invaluable, helping me achieve a First-Class Honours degree. Outside academics, I joined the Hiking Club, exploring Bristol’s green spaces and visiting Wales.
These activities kept me active and connected me with people from diverse backgrounds, enriching my perspective.
Impact on My Career and Future Goals
After graduating, I returned to Guangdong, where my UWE degree opened doors. I worked as an executive assistant at a listed company, with my UWE experience and English skills playing a key role in securing the role.
Now pursuing a master’s in public policy in the UK, I aim to blend my knowledge of the private and public sectors and contribute to meaningful change.
Parting Thoughts for Future Students
For anyone considering UWE Bristol, my advice is simple: step out of your comfort zone. Engage with the local culture, practice English, and build connections.
We, as international students, serve as bridges between cultures, fostering mutual understanding and breaking down misconceptions.
